| Stachys'Hummelo'
| | Common Name: | Betony | | Bloom color: | Dark pink Flowers, Medium green Foliage | | Height: | 18-20" | | Bloom: | Summer | | Hardiness: | Zones 4-8 | | Light: | Full sun to part shade | | Soil: | | Why you need this plant: Unlike Stachys byzantina (Lamb's Ear), this species forms large, rounded clumps of green, long and narrow, textured leaves. It is lovely even when it's not in bloom. In midsummer, sturdy spikes of lavender-rose flowers shoot up through the foliage, putting on quite a display. Since it is relatively unknown to many gardeners, people always gasp in awe of this plant when it is in bloom. It makes a unique addition to any sunny border! | | Planting Info: Stachys requires a hot dry position in full sun, preferably on a poor quality dry sandy or chalky soils. Soil must be well drained, so avoid heavy clays. Avoid mulching and fertilizer. Occasionally weed around and allow space to spread. |
