Scabiosa columbaria

'Butterfly Blue'

2000 PPA Plant of the Year

Common Name:
Pincushion flower
Bloom color:
Blue
Height:
15"
Bloom:
May-November
Hardiness:
Zone 3-7
Light:
Full Sun
Soil:
well drained, slightly alkaline, fertile

Why you need this plant:        Produces prolific numbers of 1 ½” sky blue flowers with raised stamens on long stems, thus the name pincushion flower.  Will bloom steadily and constantly until first killing frost.  Attracts butterflies and makes an excellent cut flower if harvested when blooms are ½ open.

Planting Info:       Deadheading plants throughout the summer is necessary to  keep plants looking fresh and to prolong bloom.  But be careful not to deadhead blooms; both are flat and bristle-like. The best way to distinguish the difference is that unopened blooms are smaller than spent flowers.

As the plant matures it tends to get a little woody and lose their mounding habit.  When this occurs, simply pinch back the woody central leader to maintain the symmetrical mounding. In late fall cut the stems back but do not shear the foliage, simply cut off any dead leaves around the base of the plant.
