Papaver orientalis 'Brilliant'

Common Name:
Oriental Poppy
Bloom color:
Wild fire red
Height:
30"
Bloom:
Summer
Hardiness:
Zone 3-7
Light:
Full Sun
Soil:
Deep Moist, well-drained

Why you need this plant:  Huge scented flowers good for rock gardens and for cutting.  Seed pods can be used in dried flower arrangements.  Nodding buds turn skyward upon opening.  Each flower can measure 4 to 5 inches across.  Show stoppers when in bloom.  Go dormant after bloom cycle so you should plant other perennials nearby to fill in the gaps.  Deer and rabbit resistant.

Planting Info:       Poppies are fully frost hardy and prefer little or no shade and deep, moist, well-drained soil.  Self-seed readily.  Propagate cultivars by division in spring or fall.  For cut flowers, cut just when buds start to break and sear the ends to prevent sap leakage.
