| Panicum virgatum 'Shenendoah' | | Common Name: | Red Switch Grass | | Bloom color: | Red | | Height: | 3 - 4' | | Bloom: | July-Aug | | Hardiness: | Zone 4-9 | | Light: | Full Sun to Moderate shade | | Soil: | Tolerates both wet & dry soils | Why you need this plant: A long-lived, warm season grower, 'Shenandoah' is by far the best red switch grass. Green spring foliage turns deep red by mid-summer. Starts growing in late spring but definitely worth the wait! | | | Planting Info: Leaves are deeper green in shade. Moist humus soil is best but will grow in heavier soils. Does well in humid, hot summers. Support clump with a loop of wire to keep it erect when flowering. It dies back in winter and needs no cutting back. | |
