| Imperata cylindrica'Red Baron'
| | Common Name: | Japanese Blood Grass | | Bloom color: | | | Height: | 20-24"
| | Bloom: | | | Hardiness: | Zone 6-9 | | Light: | Full Sun | | Soil: | Fertile, moist, well-drained | Why you need this plant: Although 'Red Baron' blood grass is not reliably hardy for our zone 5, it will often survive our winters if cut to the ground and mulched. Be aware of its limitations and enjoy its color during the growing season. Upright leaves emerge green at the base with red tips. The color intensifies during the summer and becomes solidly red by fall. It seldom if ever flowers. Use it for an accent plant, especially on a west-facing lawn or ridge where it will be backlit by the setting sun. | | | Planting Info: Best in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Propagate by division. Cut back once a year. If all green shoots appear, it's a sign that the cultivar is reverting to its species type. Remove and destroy them immediately. | |
