Geranium sanguineum'Alan Bloom'
| | Common Name: | Bloody Cranesbill | | Bloom color: | Pink | | Height: | 10-12" | | Bloom: | Summer | | Hardiness: | Zone 3-8 | | Light: | Full to partial sun | | Soil: | Any provided drainage is good, evenly moist | Why you need this plant: 'Alan Bloom' is a more compact geranium with larger, pinker flowers than most perennial geraniums. It blooms all summer with an abundance of flowers. Dark green foliage turns red in the fall. Leaves turn a rich red in the fall. Named by Adrian Bloom to commemorate the 85th birthday of his father, the patriarch and founder of Blooms of Bressingham Nursery in England. Attributes include heat and cold tolerance typical of the species. Ideally suited to the front of the border, rock garden or even as a groundcover. | | | Planting Info: Most cranesbills thrive in evenly moist soil throughout the growing season. When you water, soak the soil to a depth of 8-10". Place about 2" of mulch around the base of each plant after the ground warms up in the spring to keep the soil moist and cool. Fertilize with a 10-10-10 mix in early spring or apply compost prior to mulching just as new growth emerges. Removing spent flowers may encourage additional bloom. Cut back after flowering to encourage the growth of a fresh mound of foliage. Mature plants are hardy but if winter mulch is applied, remove it as soon as the weather begins to warm up in the spring. | |
