| Gaillardia grandiflora'Arizona Sun'
| | Common Name: | Meadow Cranesbill, Blanket Flower | | Bloom color: | Burgundy/Red with yellow tips | | Height: | 8-10" | | Bloom: | Summer | | Hardiness: | | | Light: | Full Sun | | Soil: | Lean, free-draining, moist | Why you need this plant: Gaillardia “Arizona Sun” is a dwarf perennial blanket flower that packs loads of blossoms in its first season from seed, making it just as useful as an annual bedding plant. Reaching just 8-10 inches tall, Arizona Sun bears 3-inch, single mahogany-red daisy-type blooms with bright-yellow petal edges and continues to bloom all summer. | | | Planting Info: This summer plant thrives in full sun and will tolerate hot, dry conditions. Deadheading is optional but may be desirable for the appearance. A well-drained site is very important, particularly when overwintering. Failure for Gaillardia to return is usually due to wet overwintering conditions rather than cold temperatures. Trimming back growth in mid-fall will allow foliar growth before frost and will further overwintering efforts. | |
